Doppelganger

Payne Zhu works with model and live-streaming host Mengnan extensively to co-create this trilogy project. A year ago, the artist helped Mengnan to become an Internet celebrity with his visual and marketing strategies. After her success, Zhu intervenes her medium with staged performances. Two of the performance/installation works took place live at the Power Station of Art as part of the Nightmare of Exhibition Part II’s exhibition program. However, Mengnan and her team later decided to end the collaboration having the feeling of being manipulated.

分身佩恩恩与模特/网络主播梦楠合作,艺术家通过图像与市场策略将梦楠包装成网络红人,并在梦楠获得人气后利用她的展示媒介进行介入与干预性表演。佩恩恩根据现场来决定脚本执行到何种程度,但主播梦楠成名后对于这种“被操控的现实”感到不满,并非因为信息不对等,而是表演中梦楠没有获得预期的、即刻生效的“艺术上的回报”。相反,梦楠觉得“被操控的现实”损害了她辛苦经营的网络形象。梦楠及其背后团队决定暂停与佩恩恩的直播表演合作…

Payne Zhu created an episode of “kidnapping” during the opening of the exhibition. He kidnapped an Internet celebrity who makes a living by cashing other people’s desire (through her streaming broadcast channel). The viewers who were supposed to watch performance that night were stimulated by the sensual kidnapping, but they also somehow participated in the art opening as well, albeit completely confused. They saw Zhu’s act as part of promoting and dismissed it till the end. Mengnan’s was a strange intervention of the opening of the exhibition — her erotic performance was going on in the same time with the speech given by the museum officials.

佩恩恩在展厅制造了一起绑票“事故”,他绑架了一位利用情色表演将欲望变现的网络红人梦楠,同时抢走她的直播账户要挟直播间的观众听从他的指示一起表演网络共时戏剧,观众嘲笑佩恩恩的天真,他们无视挟持,鼓励撕票,更借助网络语言鼓励他带来更大的欲望刺激。佩恩恩的邀请与要挟变成了他们眼中的营销与广告,表演在谩骂与嘲笑的失败氛围中突然收场。

An erotic live-streaming host and a Rinpoche (living Buddha) have something in common: they have to constantly invent new desire for their supporters/fans/believers to buy in. They are both micro-demand-supply systems. And they are both strange guests for an art museum. Payne Zhu wanders between these two spaces of desire. He invited a Rinpoche to come to the museum to give a speech about his spiritual life, his views in Buddhism, and his mildly reformist ideas. Giving religious speeches is essentially how he makes living. On the other side of the same space in the museum, Mengnan was creating images of desire and transforming them to exchange value (receiving “gifts” from her viewers which can be cashed out). She stimulated the viewers by performing sexually indicted banana-eating, in the middle of which Zhu interrupted and violently broke off the bananas with Mengnan. The viewers were enraged. The two performances went on at the same time, creating an overwhelmingly bizarre situation in the museum space. 

仁波切和情色主播都是打破工作与休闲之间固定界限的出色职业类型。同时,他们需要不断发明新的欲望来满足供养他们的信众与粉丝,佩恩恩疲于奔走于这两个欲望空间之中。

佩恩恩诱骗空萨灯刹仁波切离开他习惯的道场到美术馆就仁波切的身份问题展开讨论,他希望将仁波切从“圣位”拉向“人位”,而空萨灯刹从大乘佛教普度众生的角度考虑需要维护宗教化与形式化的教义不愿打破仁波切的制度及其符号合法性,他更倾向在传法的进程中进行一种缓慢的改革。空萨灯刹仁波切原本答应佩恩恩进入网络空间与主播一起表演,但因打卦卦象奇异而拒绝,佩恩恩在现场最后一次邀请空师,空师仍因卦象拒绝,最后由佩恩恩代替空师进入网络空间去会一会“大千世界的众生”。

在展厅,空师开示的舞台对面,主播梦楠如常在直播间进行表演,不断创造欲望,并冀令其转化为交换价值。这些欲望经过表演编码成了吃香蕉、艳舞、巨乳等图像,刺激了观众窥视与“供养”的行为,网络技术继而转码将其“合法化”,佩恩恩中途进入直播间,假借给“断货的香蕉—欲望投射工具”补仓,面对数据观众与梦楠一起将所有的香蕉折断…
